'Homebound' bags India's Oscar Spot for 2026

In a milestone for Indian cinema, Neeraj Ghaywan's poignant drama “Homebound” has been named India's official entry for the 98th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature category, edging out heavyweights like Pushpa 2: The Rule. The announcement, made Friday by the Film Federation of India (FFI), has ignited a wave of congratulations from Bollywood luminaries, though not without sparks of controversy over the film's unflinching portrayal of caste and religious divides.

Produced by Karan Johar under Dharma Productions and Adar Poonawalla of the Serum Institute of India, with Hollywood icon Martin Scorsese serving as executive producer, “Homebound” stars Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor. The film, which premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and earned second runner-up honors in the International People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, is slated for a theatrical release across India on September 26.

At its core, “Homebound” weaves a tale of resilience amid adversity, inspired by journalist Basharat Peer's 2020 “New York Times” article, "A Friendship, a Pandemic and a Death Beside the Highway." The narrative tracks the unbreakable bond between two childhood friends a Dalit youth (Jethwa) and a Muslim man (Khatter) as they navigate the treacherous path to a police constable job, a role they see as a ticket to dignity long denied by societal prejudices.

The selection committee, chaired by veteran producer N. Chandra, chose “Homebound” from a competitive shortlist that included Telugu blockbusters “Kannappa” and “Kuberaa”, as well as Anupam Kher's “Tanvi the Great”. Ghaywan, whose directorial debut “Masaan” (2015) also turned heads internationally, hailed the honor as "humbling and a matter of pride," emphasizing the film's roots in "the love for our land and our people." Johar echoed the sentiment, calling it his "labour of love" and expressing hope that it resonates globally.

Veteran Anil Kapoor penned a heartfelt note: "Proud beyond words! 'Homebound' is India's official entry to the Oscars. Congratulations to the entire team and to @ishaankhatter, @janhvikapoor and @vishaljethwa06, your journeys, your talent, and your honesty on screen make this moment truly special." He extended "immense respect" to Ghaywan's direction, Johar's backing, and producer Somen Mishra for championing meaningful stories.
