The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has launched green water tanker services across the Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri regions as part of its 37th Foundation Day celebrations. The initiative was also extended to the Dr BR Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat, where arrangements were made to supply treated wastewater for non-drinking purposes. Executive Directors, Operations Directors and municipal officials jointly inaugurated the services, marking another step towards conserving drinking water and promoting the sustainable use of alternative water resources.

The initiative aims to reduce dependence on potable water by encouraging the use of treated wastewater from Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) for activities that do not require drinking-quality water. Gardening, landscaping, maintenance of green spaces and construction activities are among the key areas where recycled water can be utilised. The Water Board intends to expand the use of treated wastewater and reduce the unnecessary consumption of fresh water for such purposes.

The programme is particularly significant for the State Secretariat, which currently receives around 2.5 lakh litres of drinking water every day from the Water Board. Of this quantity, approximately 50,000 litres are used for maintaining gardens and other green spaces within the premises. Officials have decided to replace the potable water currently used for these activities with treated water supplied from nearby STPs.

As part of the plan, a dedicated pipeline will be laid within a week to connect the Secretariat with the 20 MLD-capacity Sewage Treatment Plant near Hussainsagar. Until the pipeline becomes operational, the required quantity of treated water will be transported through green water tankers to ensure uninterrupted supply for landscaping and gardening requirements.

The Water Board expects the arrangement to save 50,000 litres of drinking water daily, bringing down the Secretariat's potable water consumption by approximately 20 per cent.

The launch of green water tanker services across the three regions reflects the Water Board's efforts to promote wastewater recycling and improve water-use efficiency. By directing treated wastewater towards non-potable applications, the initiative is expected to conserve valuable drinking water supplies while supporting the city's growing landscaping, infrastructure and construction needs.
