Historic launch: Arunachal’s first commercial coal block

Arunachal Pradesh is set to make history on Monday with the launch of its first commercial coal mine at the Namchik-Namphuk coal block, opening a new chapter of growth, energy security, and local prosperity, the Ministry of Coal announced.

Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy will inaugurate the project with a Bhoomi Poojan, hand over the mining lease, and flag off CPPL’s(Coal Pulz Pvt Ltd) tools and machinery to the site. The launch will also feature a 100-tree plantation drive, highlighting the government’s commitment to sustainable development.

The Namchik-Namphuk block, with coal reserves of 1.5 crore tonnes, was originally allocated in 2003 but faced years of delays due to regulatory, infrastructural, and logistical challenges. Its revival in 2022 through a transparent auction has finally paved the way for private sector participation, ending two decades of inactivity.

This initiative reflects the government’s EAST philosophy-Empower, Act, Strengthen, Transform,aimed at unlocking the Northeast’s potential. With this development, Arunachal Pradesh joins India’s coal journey, contributing to the country’s position as the world’s second-largest coal producer, which crossed a record 1 billion tonnes last year.

The mine is projected to generate over ₹100 crore annually for the state, creating jobs and boosting local prosperity. The Ministry emphasized that the project will curb illegal mining, ensure resource accountability, and unlock critical minerals essential for technology and national security.

While driving economic growth, the government has reiterated its commitment to ecological preservation. Mining in the Northeast will follow sustainable practices, with Mission Green Coal Regions targeting the reclamation of 16,000 hectares of mined land by 2030.

Over the past decade, the Northeast has seen investments exceeding ₹6 lakh crore, with Arunachal alone witnessing a 16-fold increase in allocations since 2014. Infrastructure developments,including highways, bridges, airports, rail projects, and the Northeast Gas Grid, have transformed the region into a hub of opportunity and connectivity.

Workers will benefit from extensive welfare measures, including insurance, accident cover, scholarships, and improved living standards. The launch of the Namchik-Namphuk coal block stands as a symbol of development, ecological responsibility, and community participation, reinforcing India’s energy security and the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
