Historic first: Life-size Vivekananda statue installed in Seattle US

In a moment that bridges history and modern identity, a life-size statue of Swami Vivekananda has been unveiled in the heart of Seattle, marking a first-of-its-kind tribute in the United States . Installed at the bustling Westlake Square, the bronze statue stands as a symbol of cultural exchange and global connection .

Sculpted by Indian artist Naresh Kumar Kumawat, the statue was jointly unveiled by Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson and India’s Consul General Prakash Gupta. It is the first time a US city government has hosted a Vivekananda monument , placing Indian spiritual heritage in a prominent global space.

The statue, gifted by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, reflects India’s cultural diplomacy efforts . Located in one of Seattle’s busiest public spaces, the monument quietly tells a story that began over a century ago.

That story traces back to 1893 in Chicago, where Vivekananda delivered his historic address at the World’s Parliament of Religions, introducing Indian philosophy to the Western world.

Speaking at the unveiling, Mayor Wilson highlighted Seattle’s inclusive and multicultural spirit , noting that the statue strengthens India–US cultural ties . The ceremony, attended by community leaders and the Indian-American diaspora, coincided with ICCR Day celebrations.
