Hindu Trader Brutally Murdered in Mymensingh, Bangladesh
In a shocking incident of violence, a 62-year-old Hindu trader, Susen Chandra Sarkar , was hacked to death by unidentified assailants inside his shop in Trishal upazila of Mymensingh district on Monday night.
According to Trishal Police Station chief Muhammad Firoz Hossain , the attackers struck Sarkar with a sharp weapon, left him inside the shop, and pulled down the shutters before fleeing. Sarkar, the owner of Bhai Bhai Enterprise and a resident of Southkanda village , was discovered by family members who had been searching for him. He was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital , where doctors declared him dead.
Police have launched an investigation, visited the crime scene, and sent the body for post-mortem examination. No arrests have been officially announced so far. Investigators said they are examining multiple possible motives, including robbery and personal dispute , while pursuing all available leads to identify the attackers.
Sarkar’s son Sujan Sarkar said the family had no known enemies and alleged that the assailants looted several hundred thousand taka from the shop after killing his father. He demanded swift identification and strict punishment of those responsible.
The killing has again drawn attention to Mymensingh district , which has witnessed other brutal attacks on Hindu minorities in recent months . In December, Dipu Chandra Das , a Hindu garment worker, was lynched by a mob in the Bhaluka area of the same district , with videos circulating online showing him being beaten, tied to a tree and set on fire , triggering widespread outrage.
Minority rights groups have warned that such incidents appear to be increasing as Bangladesh approaches parliamentary elections scheduled for February 12 . The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has alleged a sharp rise in communal violence, claiming it recorded 51 such incidents in December 2025 alone .
According to the 2022 census, Bangladesh’s Hindu population stands at 13.13 million , accounting for about 7.95 per cent of the country’s total population.
