Hindu petrol pump worker crushed to death in Bangladesh as minority violence

The brutal killing of a 30-year-old Hindu petrol pump worker in Bangladesh’s Rajbari district has once again drawn attention to a disturbing rise in violence against minority communities in the country in the run-up to national elections.

The victim, Ripon Saha , was crushed to death early Friday morning after attempting to stop a vehicle from leaving a petrol station without paying for fuel. According to police, a black SUV arrived at Karim Filling Station in Goalanda Mor around 4:30 am and refuelled before the driver attempted to flee without settling the bill. When Saha stood in front of the vehicle to block its exit, the driver allegedly ran him over and sped away, killing him on the spot.

Police later seized the vehicle and arrested two accused , including the owner of the SUV and the driver. Authorities have said a murder case will be registered , and investigations are underway.

Saha’s killing adds to a growing list of violent deaths involving members of the Hindu minority in Bangladesh over the past several weeks. At least 16 Hindu individuals have been killed between early December 2025 and mid-January 2026 , according to documented incidents, including shootings, mob lynchings, targeted attacks, and violent assaults.

Several of these cases involved allegations of theft, blasphemy, or extortion , often followed by mob violence. In multiple instances, victims were beaten to death, hacked, set on fire, or shot by unidentified assailants. Rights groups have also recorded over 50 incidents of communal violence in December alone , ranging from physical attacks to arson and intimidation.

Bangladesh’s Hindu population, which constitutes nearly 8 percent of the country’s total population , has long raised concerns about safety during periods of political tension. Minority organisations have warned that communal attacks tend to intensify ahead of elections, creating fear among vulnerable communities and potentially discouraging political participation.

Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh are scheduled for February 12 , and minority leaders have urged authorities to ensure strict law enforcement and accountability to prevent further violence.
