Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in for a second consecutive term as Assam Chief Minister on Tuesday, as the BJP-led NDA marked its emphatic return to power in the northeastern state with a high-profile ceremony in Guwahati attended by top national leaders.

The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Veterinary College Ground in Khanapara, was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi , Union Home Minister Amit Shah , Defence Minister Rajnath Singh , BJP president Nitin Nabin , and several chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from NDA-ruled states, underlining Assam’s growing political importance in the BJP’s Northeast strategy.

Four ministers were sworn in alongside Sarma Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog from the BJP, Atul Bora from the Asom Gana Parishad, and Charan Boro from the Bodoland People’s Front.

The ceremony followed a sweeping mandate for the NDA in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. The alliance secured 102 of the state’s 126 Assembly seats , with the BJP alone winning 82 seats, enough for an outright majority without relying on allies. The Congress was reduced to 19 seats, marking one of its weakest performances in the state.

The result significantly improved on the NDA’s 2021 tally of 75 seats and consolidated the BJP’s political dominance in Assam , where the alliance has now formed government for a third consecutive term .

Congratulatory messages poured in from across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Modi praised Sarma’s governance record and extended wishes to the newly inducted ministers. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed confidence in the new government, while Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu described the result as another major NDA victory in the Northeast.

During his first term, Sarma’s government focused heavily on infrastructure expansion, healthcare outreach, and welfare schemes for women and economically weaker families, along with investment promotion. However, the administration also faced criticism from opposition parties and rights groups over eviction drives and controversial policy measures that critics alleged deepened social and communal divisions.

Sarma now begins his second term with a stronger mandate and heightened expectations , both from Assam’s electorate and the BJP leadership, which views the state as a key pillar of its broader Northeast political strategy .
