High-Voltage Campaign Ends as Telangana Gears Up for Municipal Polls

The high-pitched campaign for the municipal elections in Telangana concluded on Monday. Polling will be held on February 11 for seven municipal corporations and 116 municipalities across the state. Voters can exercise their franchise from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. A total of 12,930 candidates are contesting the elections, for which the Election Commission has set up 8,203 polling stations .

If necessary, re-polling will be conducted on February 12 . The counting of votes will begin at 8 a.m. on February 13 , soon after the completion of polling. Newly elected ward members will take oath on February 14 . Elections for the posts of Municipal Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Corporation Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be held on February 16 , election officials said.

The 48-hour silence period ahead of polling has come into force. During this period, public meetings, rallies and roadshows are prohibited. The Election Commission has warned that campaigning through television, social media or mobile phones is an offence. Violators will face imprisonment of up to two years or a fine.
