The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority on Saturday reported persistently high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation across several parts of the state, prompting health advisories and cautionary measures for the public.

According to official data, UV index values exceeding eight classified under an orange alert were recorded in Konni (Pathanamthitta), Chengannur (Alappuzha), Changanassery (Kottayam), and Munnar (Idukki). Meanwhile, UV levels between six and seven, corresponding to a yellow alert , were observed at ten other locations. Similar readings were noted a day earlier, indicating a continuing trend of elevated exposure.

Experts attribute these high UV levels to intense solar radiation reaching the Earth’s surface , particularly in tropical regions like Kerala. Ultraviolet rays, a component of sunlight, become more intense during midday hours (10 am to 3 pm) when the sun is at its peak. Factors such as clear skies, high-altitude terrain, and reflective surfaces like water bodies and sand further amplify exposure.

The authority warned that prolonged exposure to high UV radiation can lead to serious health issues, including sunburn, premature skin ageing, eye damage, and increased risk of skin cancer . Vulnerable groups such as outdoor workers, fishermen, tourists, individuals with skin conditions, albinism, cancer patients, and those with weakened immunity have been urged to exercise heightened caution.

In its advisory, the KSDMA recommended avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, using protective gear such as hats, umbrellas, and sunglasses, and wearing loose, full-body cotton clothing. The public has also been advised to stay well-hydrated, take adequate rest, and consume non-dehydrating foods.

Additionally, authorities stressed the importance of ensuring adequate water, food, and shade for livestock and stray animals , as they too remain vulnerable to extreme heat and radiation exposure.

With high UV levels likely to persist, officials have called for increased awareness and preventive action to minimise health risks across the state.
