A Delhi Police head constable displayed extraordinary courage by rescuing 13 people, including 11 visually impaired students, from a raging fire in north Delhi’s Burari area during the early hours of May 17, officials said on Wednesday.

The fire broke out around 2.30 am at Daroga Market in Burari, where flames engulfed at least eight ground-floor shops before rapidly spreading to the upper floors of the building. Thick smoke soon filled the premises, blocking the staircase and trapping several residents inside.

Head Constable Amar Singh , posted at Burari police station, was on night patrol duty when a local resident alerted him about the blaze. On reaching the spot, he found panic-stricken occupants stranded inside the smoke-filled building as the fire intensified.

According to police, Singh spotted a man and a woman trapped on the second floor, with flames and near-zero visibility cutting off all escape routes. Without waiting for firefighters or additional police personnel, he stopped a passing truck, climbed onto its roof and reached the victims through a balcony.

Battling choking smoke , intense heat and spreading flames, Singh carried both victims to safety one at a time on his shoulders. Officials said the policeman later collapsed due to smoke inhalation after completing the rescue.

During the operation, Singh also learnt that 11 visually impaired students were trapped inside an adjoining building that was at risk of catching fire. Acting swiftly, he entered the premises and evacuated all the students through the staircase before the flames could spread further.

Police officials said the entire rescue operation was carried out single-handedly by the head constable before emergency services and fire personnel arrived at the scene. His quick thinking and bravery are being widely praised within the Delhi Police force.
