Hema Malini Mourns Dharmendra, Says His Absence Leaves an Irreplaceable Void

Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic and beloved stars, died on Monday, November 24, in Mumbai after a prolonged age-related illness. He was 89. His death has left the Indian film industry and fans across the world in deep mourning.

Dharmendra, born Dharam Singh Deol, appeared in more than 300 films in a career spanning over six decades. Known as Bollywood’s “He-Man”, he delivered memorable roles in classics such as Sholay , Chupke Chupke , Seeta Aur Geeta , and Dharam Veer . He received the Padma Bhushan in 2012 and also served as a BJP MP from Bikaner between 2004 and 2009.

Following his death, his wife and actor Hema Malini shared an emotional tribute on X. She described Dharmendra as a loving husband, an adoring father, and her guiding force through every phase of life. She added that her “personal loss is indescribable” and the void created by his passing would remain with her forever. She also posted family photographs featuring Dharmendra with her and their daughters Esha and Ahana.

The Deol family has now organised a public prayer meet for fans, friends, and members of the film industry to pay their final respects. The event, titled “Celebration of Life”, will be held on Thursday from 5 pm to 7.30 pm in the lawns of Taj Lands End, Bandra.

Arrangements for the gathering were underway throughout Thursday, with hotel staff coordinating with event planners to set up seating, floral decorations, lighting, and additional security. A large turnout is expected, given Dharmendra’s immense popularity and long-standing influence in cinema.

Dharmendra is survived by his first wife Prakash Kaur, Hema Malini, and their six children — actors Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Esha Deol, and Ahana, along with daughters Vijeeta and Ajeeta.

With a legacy that shaped the golden era of Hindi films, Dharmendra remains celebrated for his charm, versatility, and humility. His work continues to inspire actors and fans across generations.
