Heavy Rains Bring Relief In Kerala After Weeks Of Heatwave IMD Issues Yellow Alert
Heavy rains lashed several parts of Kerala on Wednesday, bringing much-needed relief from a severe heatwave that had gripped the state for weeks and signalling a sharp shift in weather conditions.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall activity from April 29 to May 3, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and winds reaching 40–50 kmph in various regions. A yellow alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Kottayam districts, indicating heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm .
Kerala had been reeling under extreme summer heat , leading to widespread discomfort in daily life. The heatwave resulted in surging electricity demand , as households and businesses increased use of cooling appliances such as fans and air conditioners. This in turn placed pressure on the power grid, causing occasional outages in some areas .
The intense heat also led to water stress in certain pockets , with higher consumption and evaporation affecting availability. Health officials reported increased cases of dehydration, fatigue, and heat-related illnesses , particularly among outdoor workers, the elderly, and children.
Daily life was significantly disrupted, with construction workers, farmers, and street vendors reducing working hours during peak afternoon temperatures. Schools and commuters also faced discomfort due to the persistent heat, forcing many to alter daily schedules and avoid midday travel .
The heavy rainfall on Wednesday led to a rise in water levels at the Aruvikkara Dam in Thiruvananthapuram , prompting authorities to open three shutters by 30 cm as a precautionary measure.
Officials said the current rains are expected to provide temporary relief from the heatwave conditions , while urging caution due to the possibility of strong winds and lightning in the coming days.
