Heavy Rain, Strong Winds Flatten Banana Crop Across 100 Acres in Anantapur

Banana plantations spread across nearly 100 acres in Sanap village of Atmakur mandal in Anantapur district were severely damaged after heavy rain and strong winds lashed the area on Thursday night, leaving farmers facing substantial losses.

The storm reportedly uprooted banana plants across large stretches of farmland, destroying crops that farmers had cultivated after investing heavily in inputs and labour. Several growers said they could lose around Rs 1 lakh per acre due to the damage.

Former MLA Thopudurthi Prakash Reddy visited Sanap village on Friday and inspected the affected plantations along with the farmers. He interacted with growers to assess the extent of the damage and hear about the difficulties they were facing.

The farmers told him that the combination of heavy rain and strong winds had flattened banana plants across their fields, leaving little scope for recovering the crop. They urged the government to conduct a detailed assessment of the losses and provide compensation at the earliest.

Speaking during the visit, Prakash Reddy urged the government to extend immediate support to farmers who lost their banana crop in the weather-related damage. He called for officials to visit the affected fields and conduct a prompt assessment so that the extent of crop loss could be properly documented.

He also appealed to the authorities to ensure that eligible farmers receive compensation as per the applicable rules. With farmers already facing losses after investing in their plantations, he said the government should respond quickly and provide the necessary assistance.

The damage has added to concerns among banana growers in the area, who are now seeking timely government intervention to mitigate the financial impact of the crop loss.
