Heavy Rain Disrupts Puducherry: School Holiday Announced, Fresh Weather Warnings Issued
Heavy overnight rain lashed Puducherry and its suburban areas on Friday, causing waterlogging in several low-lying localities and disrupting daily movement. The administration declared a holiday for schools across Puducherry and Karaikal as the region braced for further rainfall.
Official sources said Puducherry and its suburbs recorded 9.6 cm of rainfall in the 24 hours preceding Friday, while Karaikal received 4 cm during the same period.
Education Minister A Namassivayam announced that all government-run and privately managed schools in Puducherry and Karaikal would remain closed on Friday in view of the heavy rain. The decision followed reports of water accumulation in low-lying areas amid continuing downpours.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rainfall across the region. In its October 23 bulletin, the weather agency warned of very heavy rain at isolated places from October 23 to 26, followed by heavy rainfall at isolated places from October 27 to 29. Thunderstorms, lightning and squally weather are also likely during the forecast period.
Authorities have also taken steps to prepare for rain-related emergencies. Revenue and other departments have been placed on alert, and a control room has been set up to receive requests for assistance, according to reports. No verified contact number was provided in the available information.
With the IMD warning extending through October 29, further rainfall remains possible across Puducherry and Karaikal. Residents have been advised to follow official weather bulletins and local administration announcements for updates on rainfall and public services.
