Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds lashed several parts of Kerala on Tuesday, particularly in the northern districts, causing widespread waterlogging , disrupting normal life and prompting precautionary evacuation measures in vulnerable areas.

The southwest monsoon remained active across the state, with intense overnight rainfall affecting both urban centres and high-range regions. In Kozhikode district, several areas witnessed severe water accumulation after continuous rain. Television visuals showed inundated roads and waterlogged stretches in parts of Kozhikode city, including the beach road area, affecting traffic movement and disrupting the functioning of eateries and other businesses.

In Thrissur district, authorities shifted five families from the Areshwaram area in Mattathur village panchayat to a relief camp set up at a local government school after concerns emerged over a possible landslide in the region. Officials have advised residents living in vulnerable locations to remain alert as monsoon activity continues.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph at isolated places in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.

The weather agency has also forecast light rainfall in the remaining districts of the state and cautioned that persistent rain could trigger flash floods, waterlogging, landslides and mudslides in susceptible areas. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged people to exercise caution, especially in hilly regions and low-lying localities.

Fishermen have also been advised to avoid venturing into the sea due to rough weather conditions and strong winds along the Kerala coast.
