Heavy Rain Alert For 15 TN Districts As Heatwave Grips North Coast
The further advance of the Southwest monsoon over Tamil Nadu is bringing a mixed weather pattern across the state, with heavy rainfall in western and southern districts even as heatwave-like conditions continue in north coastal regions, including Chennai , according to the IMD.
The weather office has issued a heavy rainfall warning for over 15 districts till June 7, including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tiruvannamalai and Madurai , among others. The IMD said favourable monsoon conditions are driving intense rainfall activity in these regions.
In terms of agriculture , the early monsoon showers are proving beneficial for sowing operations and soil moisture improvement , particularly in rain-fed and western belt districts. However, officials also warned of localized risks such as waterlogging, soil erosion and damage to young crops due to heavy isolated rainfall.
On the water resources front , inflows into reservoirs in rain-affected catchments are showing improvement, offering early signs of partial recharge of tanks and groundwater systems. However, northern Tamil Nadu continues to face water stress, as rainfall activity remains limited in those areas.
District administrations have stepped up monsoon preparedness measures , including monitoring of flood-prone zones, deployment of disaster response teams in vulnerable districts, and advisories to farmers to regulate irrigation and avoid fresh sowing in heavy rain-hit pockets. Control rooms have also been activated in several districts to respond to flooding and landslide risks in hilly regions.
In contrast, north coastal Tamil Nadu remains under severe heat stress , with temperatures in Vellore, Tiruttani and Chennai crossing 40°C . The IMD has warned that high temperature combined with humidity will intensify discomfort conditions, with maximum temperatures likely to rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in isolated areas.
Authorities have issued heatwave precaution advisories , urging residents to avoid peak afternoon exposure, maintain hydration, and use ORS solutions. Special focus has been placed on outdoor workers, with guidance on adjusted working hours and rest breaks, while civic bodies are ensuring availability of drinking water in public areas.
Overall, Tamil Nadu is witnessing a dual weather pattern monsoon-driven heavy rain in the south and west, and persistent heatwave conditions in the north coastal belt , requiring simultaneous flood and heat management strategies.
