Heatwave Alert: Temperatures Soar Past 44°C Across India, IMD Issues Warning
India is witnessing a sharp rise in temperatures as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a comprehensive advisory warning of widespread heatwave conditions across several parts of the country . With the summer intensifying, large regions are already experiencing extreme daytime heat along with uncomfortable night temperatures.
According to IMD data, maximum temperatures in northwest, central, and peninsular India are currently ranging between 40°C and 44°C , with the highest temperature of 44.5°C recorded in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan . Many areas are reporting temperatures 5°C or more above normal , indicating a strong heat stress situation developing across the country.
The impact of the heat is also clearly visible in the southern states. Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are facing sustained heatwave-like conditions , with temperatures remaining in the 40°C to 44°C range across several districts . In Telangana, cities like Hyderabad and interior districts are experiencing intense dry heat along with warm nights, while in Andhra Pradesh, both coastal and inland regions are facing a combination of high temperature and humidity, making conditions more stressful for residents.
The IMD has warned that heatwave conditions are likely in isolated pockets of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and parts of central India in the coming days. At the same time, hot and humid weather conditions are expected over coastal and eastern regions, further increasing discomfort levels.
The department also noted that warm night conditions are likely in parts of northern India , which can prevent the body from cooling down, increasing health risks such as fatigue and dehydration. Temperature trends suggest no significant change in northwest India until April 27 , followed by a gradual fall, while central and other regions may see fluctuating heat conditions.
In view of the situation, IMD has issued detailed heat safety guidelines , advising people to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, stay hydrated, wear light and breathable clothing, and reduce outdoor physical activity. Special care has been advised for children, elderly people, and those with health conditions .
The IMD stressed that early precautions are essential to prevent heat related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke. It further indicated that heatwave conditions may persist over the next seven days across multiple regions , while coastal areas will continue facing hot and humid weather.
The seasonal outlook for April to June 2026 also shows above normal heatwave days across parts of east, central, and northwest India , highlighting the need for continued preparedness. The IMD has urged citizens to follow official advisories and stay updated as the country continues to face intense summer conditions.
