Head Constable Swaroopa submits charge sheets in Telugu, breaking new ground in T’gana police

In a first for the Telangana Police, investigations and court documents - traditionally prepared in English - are now being filed in Telugu, making them more accessible to the public. This initiative was led by Head Constable Swaroopa of Dundigal Police Station in the Medchal-Malkajgiri district.

Many ordinary citizens struggle to understand English legal documents, creating a barrier to accessing justice. To address this, Swaroop filed two full charge sheets in Telugu in 2025, marking the first such attempt in the district. This effort ensures that case details are clear to everyone and helps improve public engagement with the judicial process.

Swaroopa’s approach went beyond paperwork. She also successfully resolved a missing person case, quickly reuniting a lost child with their family, highlighting her commitment to both law and humanity.

The initiative received encouragement from ACP Shankar Reddy, and the Telugu charge sheets were formally submitted to the Medchal Court. Officials noted that using the local language in court documents enhances transparency in the judicial process, particularly benefiting rural communities.

Swaroopa’s pioneering work has earned her state-level recognition. At a ceremony held at the Command and Control Center (CCC) in Banjara Hills, Telangana DGP B. Shivadhar Reddy and IPS officer Shikha Goyal personally felicitated her with a commendation certificate. This initiative is seen as a landmark step for the police department, inspiring other stations to adopt Telugu for investigation reports in the future.
