‘He Is Lying’: BJP Hits Back at Rahul Gandhi Over Murmu Meeting Remarks
The BJP on Friday rejected as a “lie” Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s claim that President Droupadi Murmu did not deny allegations of “vote chori” and accepted the opposition’s account of alleged electoral irregularities during a meeting with an INDIA bloc delegation.
The opposition delegation met President Murmu on Friday evening and submitted a memorandum raising concerns over alleged “vote chori” (vote theft). Following the meeting, Gandhi said he was shocked that the President had not denied the charge and had “accepted” what the opposition leaders told her.
Reacting to Gandhi’s remarks, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi described them as “unfortunate and bizarre” and accused the Congress leader of misleading the public.
“He is lying,” Trivedi told reporters, rejecting Gandhi’s assertion that the President had accepted the opposition’s allegations. The BJP Rajya Sabha MP accused Gandhi of pursuing what he termed “malicious politics” by drawing constitutional institutions into political controversies.
Trivedi said Gandhi’s claim that the President had accepted the opposition’s version was part of a pattern in which, he alleged, the Congress leader was turning constitutional bodies into targets of political attacks. He also questioned Gandhi’s account of the meeting, referring to the body language and facial expressions of the leaders who stood alongside him while he addressed the media.
According to Trivedi, the manner in which the opposition leaders appeared during the interaction raised doubts about whether Gandhi’s remarks accurately reflected what had transpired during the meeting.
The BJP leader further alleged that Gandhi’s past conduct followed a similar pattern, adding that his latest statement appeared to be driven more by political considerations than by facts.
The exchange came amid the opposition’s allegations of electoral irregularities and its efforts to raise the issue with the President. The two sides offered contrasting accounts of the meeting, with Gandhi claiming that the President had not rejected the opposition’s charge, while the BJP strongly disputed his interpretation. The report did not independently establish what the President said during the closed-door interaction.
