The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Monday conducted an in-chamber hearing on a petition linked to the alleged dual citizenship controversy involving Rahul Gandhi, and fixed April 15 as the next date of hearing.

The matter was heard by Justice Subhash Vidyarthi after the Centre informed the court that the issue was sensitive , prompting proceedings to be held privately. The petition, filed by BJP worker S Vignesh Shishir, challenges a January 28, 2026 order of a special MP/MLA court in Lucknow, which had declined to order registration of an FIR against Gandhi, stating it was not competent to decide citizenship issues .

The petitioner has sought directions for an FIR and detailed probe , alleging violations under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) , Official Secrets Act, Foreigners Act and Passport Act. The High Court had earlier asked the Centre to clarify action taken on a complaint alleging Gandhi’s British citizenship , and records from the Ministry of Home Affairs have since been produced and examined.

The case originated in Rae Bareli and was transferred to Lucknow on December 17, 2025 . Proceedings are ongoing.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi has denied the allegations , maintaining that he is solely an Indian citizen and has complied with all legal disclosure requirements. The Indian National Congress has dismissed the controversy as politically motivated , asserting that similar claims have been raised earlier without proof and expressing confidence that the courts will find no merit in the petition.
