HC directs U/A certificate for Thalapathy Vijay film after January 9 release missed
The Madras High Court on Friday directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue a U/A certificate to actor-turned-politician Vijay’s much-anticipated film Jana Nayagan , removing a key regulatory hurdle that had forced the makers to postpone its planned theatrical release.
The film, originally scheduled to hit theatres on January 9 , did not release as planned in Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh or elsewhere , after the censor certificate was not issued in time. The producers had earlier announced the postponement, citing delays beyond their control, and said a revised release date would be announced later.
Justice P T Asha , who heard the matter, passed the order after reserving judgment earlier this week. During the hearings, the court questioned the CBFC’s decision to refer the film for review following a complaint alleging it hurt religious sentiments, despite an earlier recommendation for a U/A classification.
According to the filmmakers, Jana Nayagan was submitted for certification on December 18 . A screening committee that viewed the film the following day suggested the removal of certain scenes and the muting of specific dialogues. The production house told the court that all changes were implemented promptly, yet the censor certificate was still withheld, even as the release date approached.
The CBFC informed the court that the film could not be released without formal certification under the Cinematograph Act, prompting the producers to move the High Court seeking relief.
Directed by H Vinoth , Jana Nayagan stars Vijay alongside Prakash Raj, Pooja Hegde and Mamitha Baiju . The film has attracted intense public and political attention as it is widely regarded as Vijay’s final film before he devotes himself fully to active politics.
With the High Court’s directive now in place, the makers are expected to receive the U/A certificate shortly. However, no new release date has been officially confirmed so far , leaving fans across southern states awaiting an announcement.
