Haryana Police’s mobile application Abhedya is gaining traction as a preventive tool against cybercrime, particularly extortion and harassment through international numbers. Introduced recently, the app is designed to block suspicious digital communications before they reach users, marking a shift towards proactive policing.

The application functions as a real-time filter, automatically detecting and blocking calls, messages, voice notes, images and videos originating from potentially harmful international sources. By intercepting such communications at the user level, the system aims to neutralise threats commonly used by criminals posing as gang members or fraudsters.

Officials said the initiative addresses a growing challenge in law enforcement tracking crimes linked to foreign or virtual numbers, which are often difficult to trace. By blocking these channels, the app forces offenders to rely on local numbers, enabling faster identification and investigation by police.

Early indicators suggest a positive impact. Authorities report a noticeable decline in extortion attempts involving international numbers, along with improved efficiency in tracking suspects. Users have also reported reduced instances of threatening WhatsApp calls and messages, contributing to a heightened sense of security.

Despite being in its initial phase, the app has seen gradual adoption across the state, with particular traction in districts such as Jind and Kaithal. Police officials say the initiative has received encouraging feedback, with other states exploring similar technology-driven models.

Senior officers have described Abhedya as a benchmark in modern policing, emphasising its role in preventing crimes such as extortion, stalking and cyber fraud before they occur. The approach reflects a broader shift from reactive investigation to pre-emptive digital security.

However, as with any system that interacts with user communications, questions around data handling and privacy remain relevant. While no data breaches have been reported, experts underline the importance of transparency in areas such as data storage, encryption standards and user consent to ensure sustained public trust.

Haryana Police maintains that the application’s primary objective is to protect citizens from digital threats and psychological distress, while strengthening law enforcement capabilities through the use of technology.
