Haryana grants age relaxation to ex-Agniveers, boosts Agnipath trust

The Haryana government has announced a major step to support former Agniveers by granting relaxation in the upper age limit for direct recruitment to state government posts. The decision, aimed at facilitating their transition into civilian life, is also expected to enhance youth confidence in the Centre’s Agnipath scheme.

According to an official statement, Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi has issued a circular directing all departments, boards, corporations, universities, and field offices to implement the policy. As per the decision, ex-Agniveers who are domiciles of Haryana will receive a three-year relaxation in the prescribed upper age limit for Group ‘B’ and Group ‘C’ posts. Additionally, members of the first batch of Agniveers will enjoy a five-year relaxation.

The move aligns with the Centre’s amendment to the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules, 1961, through a Gazette notification issued on June 17, 2025. The amendment designates the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) as the nodal authority for coordinating and facilitating the career progression of Agniveers after their four-year tenure in the armed forces.

Haryana has been among the proactive states in extending support to ex-Agniveers, earlier offering 10 per cent reservation in jobs such as constable, forest guard, and jail warden, along with interest-free loans and industrial incentives for those employing Agniveers.

Experts believe the latest decision could positively shape youth perception of the Agnipath scheme by providing assurance of stable post‑service opportunities. It may also encourage higher participation in future military recruitment drives particularly in states like Haryana, where, according to official figures, 2,893 Agniveers were recruited from Haryana during 2023‑24.

However, observers caution that the success of such initiatives will depend on effective implementation and ensuring adequate job openings, both in government and the private sector, to absorb the increasing number of ex-Agniveers.

By reinforcing coordination between the Centre and the states, Haryana’s move is seen as a significant step towards integrating young veterans into mainstream employment and strengthening public trust in the Agnipath model.
