Harry and Meghan’s UK Return Could Open Door to Long-Awaited Royal Reunion
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to return to the United Kingdom from California in the coming weeks, bringing renewed attention to the couple’s strained relationship with the British royal family.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have reportedly enrolled their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, in British schools for the autumn term. The family is expected to live at a private residence outside London and is not expected to resume royal duties.
Their return could mark a new chapter in relations with King Charles III and Prince William, although significant tensions remain. Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and later moved to California. Their relationship with the monarchy deteriorated following interviews, documentary appearances and Harry’s memoir Spare, which detailed grievances involving royal life and palace officials.
Harry has also faced a prolonged dispute over security arrangements in Britain. He has argued that he and his family require police protection when visiting the country, while authorities have maintained that security decisions depend on official assessments.
The couple’s return comes as King Charles continues cancer treatment, adding a personal dimension to Harry’s decision to spend more time in Britain. Harry has previously spoken about wanting his children to develop a relationship with their grandfather and has expressed a desire for reconciliation with his family.
Royal historian Ed Owens said recent developments, including a reported meeting between Charles, Harry, Meghan and their children at Highgrove, could have created a pathway for reconciliation.
However, repairing Harry’s relationship with William may prove more difficult. Royal experts believe Charles could eventually forgive his younger son, while William may remain more cautious over what he considers a deep family betrayal.
The couple’s return is therefore likely to test whether time and proximity can heal one of the monarchy’s most public family rifts, while avoiding renewed tensions and competition with the Prince and Princess of Wales.
