Harmanpreet confident in squad’s strength ahead of WC

With a blend of youth and experience, India’s women’s cricket team is ready to chase glory at the ICC Women’s World Cup, says captain Harmanpreet Kaur, aiming to turn near misses into a historic victory.

Hosting the tournament for the fourth time, India has come close to lifting the trophy twice before, most recently in 2017 when Mithali Raj’s side narrowly lost to England in a thrilling Lord’s final. With the World Cup back on home soil, the current squad is determined to go one better.

“There is a healthy mix of youth and experience across all departments in our World Cup squad,” Harmanpreet said in her column for the ICC. “We have plenty of batting talent with Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, Harleen Deol, Pratika Rawal, Richa Ghosh, and Uma Chetry in the mix.”

Mandhana has been in sensational form, scoring back-to-back centuries against Australia in recent ODIs, while opener Pratika Rawal also impressed with consistent performances. Harmanpreet believes the batting line-up is equipped to handle pressure situations and set or chase challenging totals.

The bowling unit, too, has been strong, particularly in the spin department. Renuka Thakur and Arundhati Reddy lead the attack alongside promising youngsters Kranti Gaud, Sree Charani, and Radha Yadav. The trio of all-rounders – Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, and Amanjot Kaur can change games with both bat and ball, providing the team with vital balance.

Harmanpreet, who played a pivotal role in India’s 2017 World Cup run with her unbeaten 171 in the semifinal against Australia, emphasized the team’s preparation and focus. “With a well-balanced squad, dedicated preparation, and a hungry, determined mindset, we are entering the World Cup with positivity and belief,” she said.

Acknowledging the stiff competition from seven-time champions Australia, as well as England and New Zealand, the Indian captain said the team’s confidence in their skills and strategies will be crucial. “Recent results, both at home and abroad, have been encouraging, and we aim to build on that momentum during the tournament,” she added.

With a blend of experienced campaigners and exciting young talent, Harmanpreet’s India is set to make a serious challenge for the World Cup title.
