Harivansh elected Rajya Sabha deputy chairman for third term, pledges dignity and fair conduct
Harivansh was elected unopposed as the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman for a third consecutive term on Friday , marking a rare continuity in one of Parliament’s key presiding positions. The House later witnessed a series of felicitations from members across party lines, reflecting broad acceptance of his role in the Upper House.
Soon after his election, Harivansh assured members that he would work to uphold the dignity of the Rajya Sabha , protect the rights of members , and ensure the smooth and orderly conduct of proceedings. He said he would discharge his responsibilities strictly within the framework of the Constitution, parliamentary rules, and established democratic traditions .
Emphasising the importance of parliamentary conduct, Harivansh said that while the House is meant for healthy ideological debate and discussion , there should be no space for bitterness in democratic functioning. He underlined the need for cooperation and respect among members to strengthen parliamentary democracy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi , Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan , Leader of the House J P Nadda , and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge congratulated him on his election and wished him success in his new term. Modi praised Harivansh’s experience, his efforts to bring members together, and noted his background in journalism and public service.
Kharge, while extending his wishes, also flagged concern over the vacancy of the Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker’s post since 2019, calling it against the spirit of the Constitution. He urged that Opposition voices be given adequate time and space in the functioning of the House.
The motion for his election was adopted unopposed, although members of the Samajwadi Party and Trinamool Congress staged a walkout during the proceedings.
After assuming charge, Harivansh briefly presided over the House and adjourned the proceedings for the day. The Rajya Sabha is scheduled to meet again at 11 am on Saturday.
His third term begins with expectations of continuity, balance, and a steadying presence in the Upper House at a time of sharp political differences.
