Former Telangana minister and BRS Legislature Party Deputy Floor Leader T. Harish Rao has demanded immediate intervention to address the grievances of Maheshwaram Government Medical College students, who have been protesting for three days over the lack of basic facilities at their campus in Mangalpally village of Ibrahimpatnam constituency. Harish Rao, accompanied by former minister Sabitha Indra Reddy, former MLA Manchireddy Kishan Reddy and BRS general secretary Kyama Mallesh, visited the protest camp on Wednesday and interacted with students and their parents. He also spoke to Ranga Reddy District Collector Narayana Reddy and Director of Medical Education Vani Devi, urging them to resolve the issues immediately.

Expressing concern over the condition of an institution training future doctors, Harish Rao said the college lacked essential facilities, including drinking water, washrooms, laboratories, a library and hostel amenities. He alleged that the building owner had informed the government that rent, electricity and water bills had remained unpaid since August 1, 2024, affecting the maintenance of the premises.

He further claimed that the college principal had written to the government about unhygienic conditions, accumulated garbage and the presence of snakes, dogs, pigs and monkeys on the campus. Exposed electrical wiring and inadequate sanitation were among the other concerns raised by students.

Harish Rao also questioned the safety and regulatory compliance of the building housing third-year students, alleging that it lacked an occupancy certificate, fire safety clearance and Pollution Control Board permissions. He asked Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha to explain how the institution was functioning despite these shortcomings.

Highlighting transportation difficulties, he said students had to walk nearly two kilometres from the main road as buses and personal vehicles were not allowed inside the campus, causing particular inconvenience to women students.

Recalling the previous BRS government's initiatives, Harish Rao said 33 government medical colleges were established under the objective of having one college in every district. He claimed that MBBS seats increased from 2,850 at the time of Telangana's formation to nearly 10,000 during the KCR government. He added that Rs. 182 crore had been sanctioned for Maheshwaram college infrastructure, while 25 acres were allocated for the institution.

Demanding a permanent solution, Harish Rao asked the government to relocate the college within two months to a fully equipped building near Vanasthalipuram or LB Nagar TIMS. Until then, he sought immediate drinking water, sanitation and bus facilities. He assured students that the BRS would continue supporting their protest and raise the issue in the Assembly if the government failed to act.
