Harish Rao Alleges Mafia Shadow Over Bhupalpally Transport Officer's Death
The death of Jayashankar Bhupalpally District Transport Officer (DTO) Venkanna in a collision involving a coal tipper lorry has sparked a political storm in Telangana, with former minister T. Harish Rao demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Reacting to the tragedy on social media platform X , Harish Rao questioned whether officials attempting to curb illegal activities were being targeted by powerful vested interests. He alleged that those involved in unlawful sand and coal transportation often operate with impunity and called on the government to reveal the forces behind such networks.
“Are officials being run over by lorries for standing in the way of illegal operations?” Rao asked, urging the government to uncover the truth behind Venkanna’s death and place all findings before the public. He stressed that if officials performing their duties are not adequately protected, it raises serious concerns about governance and law enforcement. The BRS leader also sought a comprehensive inquiry and demanded strict punishment for anyone found responsible.
The incident has drawn widespread attention because it occurred in Jayashankar Bhupalpally , a district known for heavy movement of coal-laden vehicles linked to the Singareni coal belt . While no official evidence has emerged to suggest foul play, the tragedy has intensified scrutiny of transportation enforcement and the challenges faced by officials working in the field.
Rejecting allegations of a conspiracy, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar described the incident as a tragic accident. Expressing condolences to the bereaved family, he said Venkanna had recently been transferred from Jagtial to Bhupalpally and was performing official duties when the accident occurred.
According to the minister, the officer was escorting a harvester vehicle that had allegedly violated transport regulations when a tipper lorry collided with him. He criticized opposition parties for drawing conclusions before the completion of the investigation and appealed against politicizing the incident.
Ponnam Prabhakar said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy , currently in Delhi, had reviewed the matter and directed senior officials to conduct a detailed probe. The government has instructed the Principal Secretary , District Collector , and Superintendent of Police to examine all aspects of the case and submit a report.
The minister also announced that the state would extend full support to Venkanna’s family, residents of Maripeda Bangla in Mahabubabad district . The assistance package includes ex gratia compensation and a government job for one eligible family member.
Reaffirming the government's commitment to road safety and regulatory enforcement, Ponnam Prabhakar warned that stringent action would be taken against vehicles violating rules in the transportation of minerals, including coal, granite, mining material, and fly ash. He added that the Transport Department is introducing several reforms, including automatic driving tests and stricter monitoring mechanisms, to improve road safety and reduce accidents.
As investigations continue, the focus remains on determining whether the tragedy was purely accidental or whether there are larger questions that need to be answered. For now, the death of an officer on duty has reignited debate over the safety of frontline enforcement personnel and the need for stronger safeguards while carrying out regulatory responsibilities.
