HAL signs GE engine deal to boost Tejas Mk1A programme amid IAF fleet shortfall

India’s indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mark-1A (Mk1A) programme received a major boost as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) signed an agreement with American engine manufacturer General Electric (GE) for the supply of over 100 fighter jet engines to power the second tranche of Mk1A aircraft.

HAL confirmed on social media platform X that the deal covers 113 F404-GE-IN20 engines, along with a support package, for the follow-on order of 97 Tejas Mk1A jets—comprising 68 single-seat fighters and 29 twin-seat trainers. Deliveries are scheduled between 2027 and 2032, with the contract valued at over ₹62,370 crore.

The first tranche, consisting of 83 Mk1A aircraft, was contracted in February 2021 for ₹36,400 crore, with deliveries originally planned for completion by February 2028. HAL faced delays due to the late arrival of engines under a previous GE agreement. Around 10 Mk1A aircraft have already been assembled, most using reserve engines as a temporary solution. According to HAL, the fourth engine was delivered on September 30, 2025, and the fifth engine is expected in November, which is expected to stabilise production.

The Indian Air Force (IAF), facing a six-decade low in squadron strength, has yet to receive its first Mk1A jet. Deliveries will commence only after successful completion of ongoing weapons-firing trials, a critical step to validate the aircraft’s performance, avionics, and weapon systems under real operational conditions. HAL has assured that 12 aircraft will be delivered by the end of 2025-26.

With the new GE engine deal in place, HAL is expected to accelerate production of both the first and second tranches, ensuring timely delivery of Tejas Mk1A jets while enabling the IAF to modernise its fleet with homegrown fighter aircraft.
