Fifteen people, including several teenagers, were killed and more than 25 injured after a speeding, paddy-laden truck ploughed into devotees outside the historic Sheetla Mata Temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior district early on Sunday, raising serious questions over road safety, digital navigation, heavy-vehicle regulation and police enforcement during major religious gatherings.

The accident occurred around 1.30 am on October 18, when thousands gathered for Navratri prayers and Ashtami celebrations. The truck reportedly entered a restricted road, travelled downhill and struck devotees, roadside stalls and the entrance gate of the approximately 125-year-old temple, bringing down part of its wall.

Police are investigating whether a Google Maps shortcut, possible brake failure, suspected alcohol consumption or other factors contributed to the crash. The driver, Dilbag Singh, 40, and the truck owner, Harpreet Singh, were reportedly arrested in Rajasthan’s Dholpur district. Police collected the driver’s blood sample for testing, while the Regional Transport Office was asked to examine the vehicle. Reports indicated that two paddy-laden trucks travelled along the restricted route, although the crashed truck’s reported 32-tonne load had not been officially verified.

The incident has exposed concerns over how heavy vehicles crossed reported checkpoints despite restrictions. Investigators are examining whether navigation errors, inadequate barricades, enforcement failures or mechanical defects contributed to the tragedy.

Chief Minister Mohan Yadav ordered a magisterial inquiry and action against nine police personnel over alleged negligence. A senior city police official was removed, while eight others, including three station house officers and traffic personnel, were suspended. Collector Ruchika Chouhan appointed Additional District Magistrate C B Prasad to conduct a separate inquiry and submit a report within seven days.

The deceased included Sarla Tomar, 50, and several teenagers, including Aman Tyagi, 13, and Lav Tyagi, 15. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ₹2 lakh for each deceased person’s family and ₹50,000 for each injured person. The state government announced ₹4 lakh for each bereaved family, ₹2 lakh for seriously injured victims and ₹50,000 for other injured people, besides covering treatment costs for the seriously injured.
