GVMC clears over 1,750 encroachments in Operation lungs 2.0

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has intensified its anti-encroachment efforts under "Operation Lungs 2.0," clearing more than 1,750 encroachments across the city in recent days. The operation, aimed at reclaiming public spaces such as footpaths, roads, and junctions, has been carried out with the support of the district administration and police.

Massive drive across eight zones

The operation commenced with eight teams working over the first two days, followed by the deployment of 24 teams on the third day, resulting in the removal of 706 encroachments in a single day. Areas like Tagarapuvalasa, Akkayyapalem, Gajuwaka, and Beach Road have seen significant clearances. Notably, the night food court near Central Park was dismantled, transforming the area into a vehicular thoroughfare.

Support and controversy

While the operation has garnered praise from residents and organizations like the Andhra Pradesh Federation of Resident Welfare Associations (APFERWAS), it has also faced criticism from political leaders. Some have expressed concerns over the displacement of vendors, particularly those from the night food court on Jail Road. In response, GVMC has assured that vending zones will be established, and displaced vendors will be provided alternative spaces within the same wards.

GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg emphasized that the initiative aims to remove encroachments obstructing vehicular movement and public convenience. Chief City Planner A. Prabhakar Rao clarified that the removal of the Jail Road food court encroachments was in line with council resolutions passed since 2023.

As Visakhapatnam prepares for upcoming national-level events, including the International Fleet Review, GVMC's efforts are expected to enhance the city's infrastructure and public spaces.
