Guwahati is set for a major aviation milestone as the city’s new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) becomes operational this Sunday.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that the state-of-the-art Integrated Terminal-2 building , built at a cost of Rs 4,000 crore , will start operations from February 22 . Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the terminal on December 20, 2025 .

“From an open space to a world-class gateway in just a few years, this transformation reflects a clear vision for a more connected and confident Assam,” Sarma said in a post on X. He added, “Inaugurated by Adarniya Shri @narendramodi ji, the @GuwahatiAirport opens its doors to the world from Feb 22.”

The project was executed by Guwahati International Airport Limited (GIAL) under the Adani Group , which oversaw the design, engineering, and construction of the new terminal.

Spread across 1,40,000 square metres , the terminal is designed to handle 13.1 million passengers per year , significantly increasing the airport’s passenger handling capacity . Its architecture draws inspiration from Assam’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage , creating a unique blend of functionality and local identity.

Officials said the old terminal will be repurposed into a cargo hub, boosting trade and cargo opportunities in the region.

The new terminal is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities , support the growth of tourism , and improve regional connectivity across the Northeast. Enhanced international links from Guwahati will further integrate the region with global markets, complementing India’s Act East policy .

The airport upgrade is part of broader infrastructure improvements aimed at fostering aviation growth in the region, including modern passenger facilities, cargo handling systems, and technological enhancements.

In a tribute to the state’s legacy, the airport also features an 80-foot statue of Assam’s first Chief Minister , Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi, unveiled by the Prime Minister outside the terminal.
