Gulveer Creates Commonwealth Games History With 5000m Bronze, Soman Rana Clinches Gold

India wrapped up its athletics campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on a memorable note as Gulveer Singh etched his name into the history books by becoming the first Indian to win a medal in the men's 5000m and the first Indian athlete to claim two medals in a single Commonwealth Games athletics edition. The historic achievement came as para shot putter Soman Rana delivered a gold medal, ensuring a memorable finish for the Indian contingent in Glasgow.

Having already claimed silver in the 10,000m, Gulveer added a bronze in the 5000m, clocking 13:24.95 in a thrilling race. The reigning Asian champion stayed with the leading pack throughout before producing a strong finish in the final lap to edge Kenya's Cornelius Kemboi by just 0.04 seconds for the bronze. Kenya's Mathew Kipchumba Kipsang won gold, while Australia's Ky Robinson secured silver.

The 28-year-old, who holds India's national records in both the 5000m and 10,000m, also became the country's first athlete to complete a medal double in track events at a single Commonwealth Games, further cementing his status among India's finest long-distance runners.

India also celebrated success in the men's triple jump, where Praveen Chithravel won silver with a best effort of 16.58m, while compatriot Selva Prabhu Thirumaran claimed bronze with 16.52m, earning his maiden major international medal. Jamaica's Jordan Scott took the gold.

The biggest celebration of the day came in para athletics, where Soman Rana clinched gold in the men's F57 shot put with a season-best throw of 13.40m. Adding to India's dominance, Shubham Juyal secured the silver with 13.28m, giving the country a remarkable one-two finish in the event.

Elsewhere, Priyanka Goswami finished seventh in the women's 10,000m race walk with a season-best effort, Dev Kumar Meena narrowly missed the podium in the men's pole vault by finishing fourth, while the Indian mixed 4x400m relay team ended sixth.

Although the able-bodied athletics contingent finished without a gold medal, India concluded its campaign with 10 medals (5 silver and 5 bronze), its second-best athletics haul in Commonwealth Games history after the 12 medals won at the 2010 New Delhi Games. Combined with Rana's para athletics gold, the final day showcased India's growing strength across both athletics and para sports.
