Gukesh takes on Chess giants in St. Louis showdown

India’s young chess prodigy D Gukesh faces a stern test against the world’s top players as the USD 412,000 Clutch Chess Champions showdown kicks off at the St. Louis Chess Club. Coming straight from Europe after guiding his team, Super Chess, to victory in the European Club Cup, Gukesh will take on the world’s elite, including Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, and Fabiano Caruana.

The rapid chess event spans 18 games, with a unique scoring and prize system designed to keep stakes high throughout. Wins on day one are worth one point, day two two points, and the final day three points. Similarly, the prize pool rises each day, with USD 72,000 available for every victory. The overall champion will pocket USD 120,000, while second place takes USD 90,000 and third and fourth USD 70,000 and USD 60,000, respectively. Draws add their prize money to the eventual winner’s total.

Carlsen, the world number one since 2011, returns from a brief break following the birth of his child and is expected to start as favourite. Caruana, a five-time US Champion, and Nakamura, racing to meet FIDE rating requirements for the next Candidates tournament, bring strong competition. Gukesh enters in good form, having scored three wins and two draws in his five games at the European Individual Championship, including a notable victory over compatriot Erigaisi Arjun.

This is the second Clutch Chess event in two weeks, following a Chess960 edition where Garry Kasparov narrowly defeated Viswanathan Anand. The St. Louis showdown promises intense matches, with six games each day and 36 points up for grabs, testing both skill and stamina.

As the world’s top minds clash in rapid chess, Gukesh will aim to prove his mettle on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
