Gukesh and Erigaisi steal the show in Mumbai’s high-stakes GCL draft

The chess world converged on Mumbai as the Global Chess League (GCL) unveiled its third edition with a high-stakes player draft on Friday. World champion D Gukesh and world No. 5 Arjun Erigaisi were snapped up by PBG Alaskan Knights, promising a thrilling spectacle at the tournament scheduled here from December 13 to 24.

A joint initiative by Tech Mahindra and FIDE, the GCL will showcase six elite teams battling in a double-round-robin format over 12 days. Each team will contest 10 matches, with results determined by a best-of-six board system. The draft, divided into "Icon Players," "Men's," "Women's," and "U-21 Prodigy" categories, sparked intense bidding wars and strategic selections.

The Icon round set the tone as Alpine SG Pipers secured American GM Fabiano Caruana, while PBG Alaskan Knights outmaneuvered rivals to claim Gukesh. Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand stayed with Ganges Grandmasters, who added 20-year-old Vincent Keymer to their roster. UpGrad Mumba Masters clinched American GM Wesley So after fierce bidding, and Erigaisi’s acquisition by PBG Alaskan Knights capped a three-way contest.

“We had a daunting task to select all six players, but we’re delighted with world champion Gukesh and a well-rounded team,” said PBG Alaskan Knights coach Abhijit Kunte. “Hosting the GCL in India will fuel our players, especially Gukesh and Arjun, to deliver performances that will captivate fans.”

Before the draft, four teams fortified their lineups by retaining key players. Alpine SG Pipers kept Hou Yifan and R Praggnanandhaa, while American Gambits held onto Hikaru Nakamura and Bibisara Assaubayeva. Defending champions Triveni Continental Kings retained Alireza Firouzja, Alexandra Kosteniuk, and Wei Yi, and upGrad Mumba Masters secured Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli, and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave.
