Gujarat’s BJP Grip Still Doesn’t Slip: BJP Sweeps Local Polls, Congress Accepts Defeat, AAP Eyes the Future
In one of the most consequential grassroots electoral exercises Gujarat has seen in years, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday delivered a resounding mandate that left little room for doubt, the saffron grip on the state remains as firm as ever, if not firmer.
Winning all 15 municipal corporations , including newly upgraded bodies such as Morbi, Nadiad, Mehsana and Vapi holding elections for the very first time, the BJP decimated both Congress and AAP across the board. In Ahmedabad alone, the party stormed home with 160 out of 192 seats , while in Surat it bagged 115 , leaving Congress with just one. In Morbi , the BJP's dominance was total, it won all 52 seats without conceding a single one to any rival.
Across all 15 municipal corporations, the BJP secured over 50 per cent vote share in each one, a statistic that underscores not just electoral superiority but a deep structural hold on urban Gujarat. The results were mirrored in rural bodies too, with the party consolidating dominance across Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Vadodara, winning commanding leads across multiple wards.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi wasted no time in hailing the mandate. He declared that the bond between Gujarat and the BJP had grown “even deeper and unbreakable,” crediting the results to the people's faith in development oriented politics. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel echoed the sentiment, saying voters had once again blessed the party's vision of good governance.
Yet, amid the saffron tide, two stories quietly unfolded. The Congress, which managed 1,740 seats in total out of over 9,200 across all local bodies, chose dignified acceptance over denial. GPCC president Amit Chavda acknowledged the results but insisted that public frustration with the BJP's misgovernance had simply not translated into votes.
The more intriguing subplot, however, belonged to the Aam Aadmi Party . From a mere 69 seats in previous elections, AAP surged past 650 seats , winning the Narmada district panchayat outright and capturing 12 taluka panchayats. In Dediapada, a tribal region, the party won all 11 district panchayat seats , a result being read as a strong signal from communities that have long felt politically sidelined.
With the 2027 state assembly elections now firmly on the horizon, Tuesday's results carry a dual message. The BJP's dominance is undeniable. But Gujarat's political ground, particularly in tribal belts and rural pockets, is quietly shifting, and that slow churn may yet rewrite the story before the next big vote.
