The Gujarat government on Monday declared Devbhoomi Dwarka, Kutch, Jamnagar and Porbandar as drought-affected districts due to inadequate monsoon rainfall, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said.

Patel said the decision was taken in accordance with the Centre’s guidelines after the monsoon season ended in the state.

“Gujarat received 89 per cent of its expected rainfall this monsoon. However, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Kutch, Jamnagar and Porbandar received very little rain. So these four districts have been declared drought-affected,” he told reporters.

The declaration highlights the uneven distribution of rainfall across the state, with the four districts receiving insufficient precipitation despite Gujarat recording 89 per cent of its expected seasonal rainfall.

The drought classification could prompt further assessments of the affected areas and consideration of appropriate relief measures, depending on ground conditions and applicable provisions.

Patel did not announce any specific financial assistance or relief package for farmers and residents of the four districts.
