GST reforms a "Game Changer" for India's economy says AP CM

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu lauded the recent GST reforms as a "game changer" that will accelerate India's economic growth. Speaking during a detailed discussion in the AP Assembly, he highlighted the coalition government's commitment to fiscal discipline and development-oriented policies.

Naidu, a veteran advocate for economic reforms, stated that the key to sustainable progress is for the government to generate income through wealth creation, rather than relying on loans for welfare programs. "If development happens, the government will get income from wealth creation," he explained. "Welfare and development will happen only if the government gets income. Those who do not create wealth do not have the authority to provide welfare. I believe that it is not right to provide welfare by taking loans." He emphasized that despite financial challenges, a focus on long-term reforms is crucial for the prosperity of both the nation and the state.

The Chief Minister elaborated on the significant changes introduced by what he termed the "second generation of GST reforms." He pointed out that the previous complex four-tier tax system, with slabs at 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, has been simplified to just two slabs: 5% and 18%. This simplification, he noted, will particularly benefit ancillary products, which previously faced inconsistent tax rates.

Naidu praised Prime Minister Modi's leadership, citing impressive statistics that demonstrate the reforms' success. The number of indirect taxpayers has seen a remarkable 132% increase, growing from 65 lakh in 2017 to 1.51 crore today. This expansion of the tax base has translated into a massive surge in revenue. GST receipts have soared from ₹7.19 lakh crore in 2018 to ₹22.08 lakh crore, a testament to the system's growing efficiency.

Looking ahead, Naidu predicted that the new tax structure would increase consumption and inject an additional ₹2 lakh crore into the economy. He championed the vision of "One Nation-One Vision," asserting that it will pave the way for India to achieve "double-engine growth." The AP Assembly echoed his sentiments, passing a unanimous resolution to welcome the GST changes and commend both Prime Minister Modi for his national leadership and Chief Minister Naidu for his support.
