GRP constable loses both legs while chasing accused at Gonda station
A Government Railway Police (GRP ) constable lost both his legs after being hit by a moving train while pursuing a suspect who attempted to escape custody at Gonda Junction railway station late Tuesday night, officials said.
The injured constable, Akash Singh (29), a 2018-batch recruit from Mau district, had taken a man identified as Sunil Kumar (35) into custody on charges of assault and alleged theft. According to GRP Station House Officer Dinesh Kumar Pandey, the incident occurred around midnight on platform number one.
While being escorted for questioning, the accused reportedly broke free and tried to board the Dibrugarh–Chandigarh Express as it was arriving at the platform. Singh chased the suspect and managed to pull him down from the train. However, in the process, he slipped into the gap between the platform and the moving train and was run over.
The constable sustained critical injuries, resulting in the amputation of both his legs. He was initially rushed to a railway hospital before being referred to a medical college and later shifted to the Lucknow Trauma Centre, where he remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
The accused, who also sustained injuries during the incident, has been apprehended again and is undergoing treatment at a medical facility. Police have registered a case against him under charges of assault, theft and escaping from custody.
GRP Superintendent of Police Laxmi Niwas Mishra has appealed to personnel across the Gorakhpur zone to contribute one day’s salary to support the injured constable’s treatment and rehabilitation.
