Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday reviewed the availability, printing and distribution of school textbooks published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training for the ongoing academic session, stressing that no student should face disruption due to delays.

The review meeting was attended by senior officials, including School Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar , along with representatives from the Ministry of Education and NCERT. The minister assessed the readiness of upcoming textbooks, stock positions across States and Union Territories , and coordination between authorities and distribution agencies .

Highlighting concerns around timely access, particularly in rural areas, Pradhan directed officials to strengthen supply chains, increase printing capacity where required, and closely monitor last-mile delivery systems to ensure books reach students without delay.

Officials noted that NCERT textbooks are primarily supplied in bulk to State governments and Union Territories, which then distribute them to government and government-aided schools, often free of cost. The focus of the review was on improving this public distribution network, which many students depend on.

As an interim measure, the minister emphasized the availability of digital textbooks through e-Pathshala to ensure uninterrupted learning until physical copies are delivered.

While the government oversees textbook supply for public institutions, private schools operate through a separate system. Schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education and other boards follow prescribed guidelines on textbooks but typically procure books independently through vendors or require parents to purchase them.

The Centre’s latest review underscores its focus on ensuring equitable access to learning resources, especially for students reliant on government distribution systems.
