Govt push to bring Indian origin researchers home
The Indian government is reviving plans to attract Indian-origin faculty and researchers settled abroad to return and contribute to teaching and research in Indian institutions. Sources say the proposal, long hindered by procedural delays and uncertainty, has regained momentum amid recent developments in the United States, where many of these academics are currently employed.
A new scheme is being formulated in consultation with the Ministries of Education and Science and Technology. The initiative aims to bring back accomplished Indian-origin scientists and researchers with notable academic achievements who are willing to spend a defined period in India conducting research or teaching. “Institutions such as the IITs have already been making efforts to engage reputed foreign faculty, including those of Indian origin,” a source said.
The move follows shifts in the US higher education landscape. The White House recently asked several universities to align with the Donald Trump administration’s education priorities or risk losing access to federal funding. Additionally, top universities like Harvard have seen billions in grants frozen over governance and admissions disputes actions widely criticized as undermining institutional independence.
India already runs several programs targeting overseas researchers. The Visiting Advanced Joint Research (VAJRA) Faculty Scheme invites scientists of Indian origin to work in publicly funded institutions for limited periods. The Ramanujan Fellowship offers opportunities for high-calibre researchers abroad to pursue academic work in India, while the Biomedical Research Career Programme (BRCP) supports researchers in establishing their careers in biomedical and public health fields.
In 2015, Karnataka’s “Welcome Home” initiative offered jobs in state universities to returning Indian-origin professors and scholars an early model for this renewed national effort to reclaim global Indian talent and strengthen India’s research ecosystem.
Role of IITs and institutions Institutions like the IITs can play a pivotal role in implementing this initiative by creating flexible visiting faculty positions, joint research programs, and collaborative projects with global universities. They can also streamline administrative processes, offer competitive compensation packages, and provide world-class research infrastructure to attract top Indian-origin talent. Strengthening international partnerships and ensuring academic autonomy will be crucial to make the return of global Indian researchers both appealing and sustainable.
