The government on Friday opened applications under three key pillars of the Rs 1.27 lakh crore Semicon India 2.0 programme and approved 12 additional electronics component manufacturing projects involving proposed investments of Rs 7,503 crore.

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the online application portal for projects covering semiconductor equipment and materials, additional fabrication plants (fabs), and the expansion of assembly, testing, marking and packaging (ATMP) and outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facilities.

Emphasising the need for quality investments, Vaishnaw said the government's semiconductor and electronics manufacturing schemes were intended for serious players with technological capabilities. "We don't want placeholders," he said.

The 12 newly approved projects under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) are expected to generate production worth Rs 39,045 crore and create 7,127 direct jobs.

With these approvals, the total number of sanctioned ECMS applications has increased to 118, covering 34 products across 16 states. The projects envisage cumulative investments of Rs 77,051 crore, production worth Rs 5.73 lakh crore and 81,755 direct jobs.

The latest approvals cover 10 product segments, including multi-layer printed circuit boards, relays, heat sinks, speciality ceramics, copper foil, battery materials and capital goods. For the first time, the scheme has approved projects involving copper foil, cathode active materials and speciality ceramics manufacturing.

Vaishnaw said India's electronics manufacturing ecosystem was moving beyond assembly towards a comprehensive domestic value chain. Semicon 2.0 will focus on developing capabilities in equipment, materials, chemicals and gases, targeting at least three major equipment manufacturers and five chemicals and gases companies.

Under the first phase of the semiconductor programme, 12 projects involving investments exceeding Rs 1.64 lakh crore were approved across six states. Five had commenced commercial production by October 2026.
