Govt Eyes Strong Anti-Adulteration Law, New Enforcement Body on Cards
The Telangana government is set to launch a dedicated enforcement mechanism to curb the growing threat of food adulteration , with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy signalling a tough stance against organised adulteration networks . Drawing from the operational models of HYDRA and Eagle , the state aims to establish a specialised system with stronger coordination, surveillance, and enforcement powers. The move comes amid rising concerns over public health risks and the limited impact of existing regulations due to weak enforcement and low conviction rates. The government plans to study national legal frameworks and introduce stricter provisions to ensure effective action and accountability.
The announcement coincided with the completion of one year of the fine rice scheme , a flagship welfare initiative benefiting around 3.39 crore beneficiaries across Telangana. At a programme held in the Assembly’s Central Hall, ministers and legislators participated in a meal prepared using fine rice distributed under the scheme, highlighting the government’s focus on delivering quality food to economically weaker sections. The scheme also addresses systemic issues in the Public Distribution System , where earlier distribution of coarse rice had led to diversion into illegal markets. Such practices enabled a recycling network that repackaged low-quality grain for profit, resulting in losses to the state without benefiting the poor.
To support the programme, the government has introduced a ₹500 per quintal bonus to encourage farmers to cultivate fine paddy varieties, aligning agricultural production with welfare needs. At the same time, efforts are underway to promote crop diversification , helping farmers transition towards more sustainable and profitable options. The state is also focusing on improving nutritious meals for students and expanding welfare coverage by issuing ration cards to all eligible households.
Emphasising a zero-tolerance policy , the Chief Minister stated that the government will not compromise on food safety or quality standards. By combining welfare delivery with regulatory reforms, Telangana aims to build a system that ensures both the availability of food and its purity, reinforcing its commitment to long-term public welfare and sustainable development.
