Govt assures 60 days of fuel, says no need to panic over shortage rumours
The government on Thursday reassured citizens that India has ample fuel supplies, with about 60 days of stock cover , dismissing social media claims of petrol, diesel, and LPG shortages as deliberate misinformation aimed at triggering panic buying .
In a statement, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said all petrol pumps across the country are fully operational and well-stocked, with no rationing in place. Highlighting India’s robust refining capacity, the ministry noted that the country, the world’s fourth-largest refiner and fifth-largest petroleum exporter , continues to supply refined fuels to over 150 nations globally.
“Every Indian refinery is operating at over 100 per cent capacity . Crude oil supplies for the next 60 days have already been secured by Indian oil companies. There is no supply gap,” the ministry stated. India’s total crude and fuel storage capacity stands at 74 days , with current stock levels ensuring around 60 days of uninterrupted supply , including strategic reserves.
Officials emphasized that even amidst the ongoing Middle East crisis , India’s fuel security remains intact. Alternative sources have compensated for any potential disruption from the Strait of Hormuz, and domestic production has increased for LPG, reducing reliance on imports.
The government warned against misleading social media posts suggesting low inventories, terming them “baseless” and a source of unnecessary public anxiety. Authorities assured that action will be taken against those spreading false information.
With next two months of crude procurement already secured , India is prepared to maintain steady fuel supplies for months ahead, ensuring every citizen has access to petrol, diesel, and LPG without interruption.
