Google Gemini AI brings TV to life

Google has introduced Gemini AI, its advanced artificial intelligence assistant, to Google TV, enhancing user interaction with more natural and conversational voice commands. The update enables users to find movies, brainstorm family trips, or receive study assistance simply by saying “Hey Google” or pressing the microphone button on the TV remote, moving beyond basic voice commands. Users can ask complex questions, receive personalized recommendations, and access explanations supported by YouTube videos for deeper understanding.

The rollout begins with TCL’s QM9K series TVs, which are the first to integrate Gemini AI along with a built-in mmWave presence sensor. This sensor detects a user’s proximity, allowing the TV to automatically power on or off and display personalized screensavers or widgets. This integration ensures the TV responds contextually to the user’s presence and commands, offering a more intuitive and immersive experience.

Gemini AI represents a significant enhancement over the previous Google Assistant, which was primarily limited to simple voice commands for content search, playback control, and basic queries. Gemini allows free-flowing, context-aware conversations, such as providing content recommendations based on multiple preferences, summarizing past seasons, or explaining complex topics like scientific concepts. The assistant also offers educational support, making Google TV a platform for learning as well as entertainment.

Currently, Gemini AI is available on TCL QM9K series models ranging from 65-inch to 98-inch, priced between $2,999 and $6,000. Google plans to expand Gemini to additional devices later in 2025, including the Google TV Streamer, Walmart Onn 4K Pro, and select 2025 models from Hisense and TCL. This expansion will extend advanced voice interaction, cross-device integration, and context-aware recommendations to a wider audience.

By introducing Gemini AI, Google aims to position Google TV as a smarter, more interactive entertainment hub. The assistant bridges entertainment, learning, and productivity while offering a natural, responsive interface, strengthening Google’s competitiveness against other smart TV platforms like Samsung and LG. With Gemini, Google TV offers a future-ready, conversational AI experience for households worldwide.
