Goods train derails in Jharkhand’s Simdega, disrupts rail traffic

A goods train carrying iron ore derailed near Kanaroan railway station in Jharkhand’s Simdega district on Wednesday morning, disrupting rail traffic in the region, officials said.

The incident occurred around 10.15 am, when ten wagons of the train went off the tracks while it was en route from Bondamunda in Odisha to Ranchi. The derailment caused a temporary halt to movement on the Bano-Rourkela rail section, officials added.

“Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported,” confirmed Ramanuj Kumar Verma, an officer from Bano police station. Railway and RPF teams were immediately deployed to the site to begin restoration and assess possible damage to the tracks.

Senior officials from the South Eastern Railway (SER) have reached the location to oversee the clearance operation. A crane and technical staff were rushed to re-rail the affected wagons, and efforts are on to restore normal traffic by late evening.

Preliminary reports suggest the derailment could have been caused by a track defect or mechanical failure, though the exact cause is still under investigation.

Railway authorities have ordered an inquiry into the incident. Passenger services on the route were temporarily delayed, and some freight operations have been diverted through alternative lines.
