Golf legend Tiger Woods detained after Florida crash, freed on bail

Golf legend Tiger Woods was released on bail late Friday after being arrested on suspicion of DUI (Driving Under the Influence) following a car crash near his home in Florida. Officials said the accident occurred when Woods attempted to overtake a truck on a residential road, causing his SUV to lose control and roll onto its side.

The crash happened shortly before 2 pm near Jupiter Island , where Woods lives. According to Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek , the 50-year-old golfer was driving his Land Rover on a two-lane road with a 30 mph (48 kmph) speed limit .

Authorities said Woods tried to pass a pressure cleaner truck, but while overtaking it his vehicle clipped the rear of the truck’s trailer. The impact caused the SUV to roll onto its driver’s side . Woods managed to crawl out of the vehicle on his own and was not injured.

Officers suspected DUI , a legal term used when a person drives while impaired by alcohol, drugs, or certain medications that affect judgement and reaction time. Woods agreed to a breathalyzer test, which showed no alcohol in his system, but he refused a urine test that could have detected drugs or medication.

Under Florida law , Woods was required to spend at least eight hours in jail before he could post bail. Officials said he was kept separate from other inmates during his brief detention.

This is the second time Woods has faced a DUI-related arrest without alcohol involvement . In 2017, he admitted that a mix of prescription painkillers had impaired him after he was found asleep behind the wheel of his car.

The latest incident comes at a sensitive time for Woods, who has been attempting a comeback after multiple injuries and surgeries. He had been deciding whether he would be fit enough to compete in the Masters starting April 9 at Augusta National.

Despite recent struggles, Woods remains one of golf’s greatest players with 15 major titles and a record-tying 82 PGA Tour victories .
