Golf Chaos at PGA Championship as Leaderboard Turns Into a Logjam
The PGA Championship has entered a rare and gripping phase, with a tightly packed leaderboard setting up a wide open weekend at Aronimink Golf Club , where scoring has proved as unpredictable as the conditions.
After two punishing rounds, Alex Smalley and Maverick McNealy emerged as joint leaders, but neither has managed to break away from a deep field stacked with major champions and elite contenders. McNealy briefly moved to six under before late bogeys pulled him back, while Smalley showed resilience, recovering from three consecutive bogeys to finish strongly.
Behind them, the chase pack remains crowded and dangerous. Stars like Scottie Scheffler , Rory McIlroy , Jon Rahm , Justin Thomas , Hideki Matsuyama and Ludvig Åberg are all within striking distance, creating one of the tightest major championship weekends in recent memory.
McIlroy described the setup as one where the entire field remains alive, noting that birdies are rare and even par feels valuable. Scheffler called the pin positions among the toughest he has faced, even compared with previous major venues.
The course conditions have only intensified the challenge. Cold winds in the morning and demanding pin placements have made scoring difficult, while small mistakes have quickly turned into dropped shots. A slim margin separates more than a dozen players, keeping the leaderboard extremely compressed.
Some players still found bright spots. Chris Gotterup produced a strong finish with a 65 , while others fought simply to make the cut in a field where survival itself has been a test.
With no clear favourite and almost the entire top field still in contention, the PGA Championship now heads into a weekend where momentum could shift in a single round, turning Aronimink into a true examination of patience, precision and nerve.
