Goldilocks phase, reforms poised to sustain India’s economic growth in 2026–27
India, the world’s fourth-largest economy, is entering a ‘goldilocks’ phase with strong growth, low inflation, and robust financial performance, supported by reform initiatives and private investment. Real GDP accelerated to 8.2% in Q2 of 2025–26 , while retail inflation fell below 2% towards year-end, reflecting a rare combination of high growth and price stability.
The government’s reform agenda, including GST rate cuts, new labour codes, and plans to update the GDP base year , has strengthened the business environment. With a GDP of USD 4.18 trillion , India has surpassed Japan and is on track to overtake Germany by 2030, projected to reach USD 7.3 trillion.
Domestic factors such as robust rural consumption, manufacturing revival, and higher agricultural output have underpinned growth, while services continued steady expansion . The Reserve Bank of India revised GDP growth for FY 2025–26 upward to 7.3% , reflecting resilience amid global uncertainties.
India’s attractiveness to global investors is evident from mega-investments by Microsoft (USD 17.5B by 2030), Amazon (USD 35B over five years), Google (USD 15B over five years), Apple, Samsung, and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India. These investments boost jobs, technology transfer, exports, and industrial growth. Analysts expect continued strong domestic and foreign investment flows, with the India-US trade deal likely further supporting exports and MSMEs.
Looking ahead to 2026–27, economists project GDP growth of 6.5–7% , with CPI inflation around 4–5% , while domestic and foreign investment flows are expected to remain robust. Experts emphasise that sustained formal sector job creation , policy support, and capital expenditure will be critical to maintain momentum, even as global trade uncertainties and currency volatility pose moderate risks.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to unveil further measures in the February 2026 Budget to deepen reforms, promote private investment, and consolidate India’s position as a global economic hub.
