Gold prices surge globally and in India amid economic uncertainty

Gold prices have surged to unprecedented levels globally and in India, driven by economic and geopolitical uncertainties. Internationally, gold has crossed $4,000 per ounce in 2025, marking an increase of over 50% this year. In India, the 24-carat gold rate has reached ₹12,317 per gram, with a 10-gram piece priced at ₹1,26,600, presenting a significant challenge for ordinary buyers.

Experts attribute the global price surge to several factors. Gold has increasingly been viewed as a “safe haven” asset in 2025 due to ongoing economic and political turbulence. Expectations of interest rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve have made non-interest-bearing assets like gold more attractive to investors. Concurrently, a weakening US dollar, partly due to trade tensions and policy uncertainties, has made gold cheaper for holders of other currencies, further boosting demand.

Central banks in China and Russia have also contributed by purchasing gold at record levels to safeguard reserves amid geopolitical risks, including the ongoing Ukraine conflict and tensions in the Middle East. Additionally, fears of economic slowdown and occasional government shutdowns in the United States have prompted investors to seek protection against inflation through gold. These combined factors have propelled gold prices from $3,500 to $4,000 per ounce internationally.

In India, domestic factors have amplified the impact of rising international prices. A weakening rupee against the US dollar has increased the local cost of imported gold. Import duties and GST further add to the price burden. Seasonal demand during festivals like Diwali and wedding season has also contributed to higher prices, with 22-carat 10-gram gold expected to reach ₹1,19,000–1,20,000 during Diwali 2025.

The price surge has affected consumers significantly. Jewelry demand has dropped by 17%, and major retailers like Titan have reported slower sales, as high prices discourage discretionary purchases. Families face financial strain, with a 100-gram purchase costing approximately ₹46,400 more than previous levels. Many consumers are opting to sell or exchange old gold rather than buy new, which may result in the lowest domestic demand in five years.

Overall, global economic uncertainty, combined with domestic currency weakness and taxation, has driven gold prices sharply higher. Analysts note that only changes in interest rates may stabilize prices in the near future.
